Somehow, the month of October totally slipped past me. I started all gun-ho with my blog back in August/September, only to lose steam about a month ago. October was a great month, perhaps made proof by my lack of posting.
Here were October's top ten highlights:
1. Otis graduated from Obedience class on 10/3. The certificate now hangs proudly over his food bowl (thanks for the idea, Erin!)
2. I volunteered for the second consecutive year at "Winos for Jesus." No, it is not really called that - it's actually "Friends of the Grape" at St. Mathius Church. Fun was had by all!
3. Otis had his first over-night trip to Grandma & Grandpa's while mom travelled to Michigan State for their career fair. Lots of great candidates for SHC (interviews are being conducted as we speak!) and Otis had a great time!
4. I volunteered for the first time at the Chicago Marathon on 10/11. It was an early morning (especially when I went to bed at 1 am the night before) and it was chilly outside - but man, what an exciting day! Tara, Larry and I manned our water station at mile 18. More than giving out water, though, I'd like to think that we also gave encouragement & support to the 45K runners. I was so inspired by all of the runners and volunteers! This will definitely be an event that I volunteer for again & again!
5. I joined a book club! I had my first "meeting" with this fun group at Leisa's place. While I didn't finish or really care for the book, it was a fun evening. This month's book is much better, and even more, the group of gals is a lot of fun to hang out with!
6. I attended my first-ever roller derby. (Thanks Erin!) What a fun night! It definitely helped that I saw the movie "Whip It" beforehand - the movie taught a few of the "rules" of roller derby and just got me generally excited for the Windy City Rollers. The night did not dissappoint!
7. "A Night of Hops" - Dave & Tara hosted a small group of beer lovers to taste a selection of IPAs. I'm personally not an IPA-lover (I prefer my stouts and porters), but I actually developed a better appreciation for the pale ale. :)
8. I attended Erin's last concert with the Evanston Symphony. It was a great show - including dueling pianos and an organ piece. We finished off the night with a yummy dinner from Las Cosinas.
9. My first condo association meeting! I feel like such an adult! Ha ha. It actually wasn't really much of a meeting, rather it was Nate, Pat and I sharing a few beers at StreetSide Cafe. Nevertheless, it was a great way to get to know a few neighbors in a casual environment. Some other "adult" moments recently have also been having my defrost heater fixed on the fridge and fixing the garbage disposal (by myself!).....while those were fun, too, I much prefer getting together with a few neighbors over beers. :)
AND FINALLY....... 10. Condo Warming Party! I hosted about 30-35 friends and neighbors for my condo warming party on 10/24. It was a great night! I love hosting and entertaining at home - maybe this is dorky, but I love planning out the food/drink, decorations, etc. Even down to the details of which plate I will use for each dish and where each plate will go on the table (anal, I know). My condo has gone under a huge transformation from when I first purchased it......and all I really did was paint it! It was great to hear all the compliments on the decor and, of course, it was great to spend an evening with friends. To top it all off, Mr. Otis was a very well-behaved co-host.
