What I gathered from the article, recipe and a later conversation with Ananth, was that dal is a traditional dish in Southern India. Dal is a combination of yellow lentils, veggies or fruit (in this case mangoes & onions) and spices (cumin, coriander, turmeric, etc). To finish the dish I stirred in some cilantro and prepared some basamati rice.
It was surprisingly delicious - a combination of sweet & savory and provided a brief respite from a cold Chicago night.
